I was born in Xicheng District Beijing, near the [Gate of Virtuous Triumph], which is also called Deshengmen. In ancient times, the army of Beijing marches out of the city from this gate, so it is given this name to bless the army. It is one of Beijing’s few preserved ancient city gates.
I stayed in Austin, Texas when I was young and also lived in Shanghai for a few years. I speak Chinese, English, quite limited Japanese and even more limited Germen and Italian. My parents claim that I once learnt Spanish in Texas, but I can only count uno dos thres cuatro cinco now. Most Chinese people understand their hometown dialect, their parents’ hometown dialect and Mandarin, while I sadly only know a lot of curse words from Shanghai, Hunan and Northeast dialect.
Both my parents and my grandfather graduated from University of Science and Technology of China, majoring in Electronics Engineering. USTC is the best university in the world! (wink
